Different Structured Film Openings

In my lesson we looked at film openings, we learnt that there are three basic structures in film openings which are:

• A discrete title sequence.
• Titles over a blank screen, followed by the narrative opening.
• A narrative opening with the titles running throughout.
• A 'stylised editing' structure.

This is a discrete-

A discrete title sequence is when it is not part of the actual film, no information about the film is given away e.g. characters, location. The film'Se7en' is an example of this, it is a discrete title sequence because throughout there are various special effects used, also there is a colour filter used along with the reduction of opacity to layer in different clips. Time manipulations are also used and there are no characters shown throughout the title sequence.

Stylised Opening

A stylised opening is when a films opening has a message something to do with the film this can be shown through special effects , the pace of how the opening of the film goes  especially through the tirtle sequence e.g the taking of pelham 123 , where the title sequence is like a moving train , which links to the film .

Open Road Edit / SFX

A technique to capture sound in films is called Foley, this is where behind the scene edits are made. These pictures show footsteps, cars going past and trees blowing in the wind.

Intertextuality

Intertextuality is when films 'borrow' ideas from each other ie- when films take aspects from another film and use it in their own. They usually be using visual references from famous influential films, for example the Psycho. The shower scene is very famous and other films seem to borrow it. films such as 'What Lies Beneath' 'Fatal Attraction' and 'The Stepfather' This is because they uses a lot of the same elements from that scene, which showed the intertextuality. All these films use a female victim who is in danger from a similar knife. The scenes include a shower curtain, the bath a bath robe worn by the characters in each clip; they all use violin to give the thriller effect.

Genre & Sub- genre

Genre is a way of categorizing films eg: Action, Romance, Horror, Thriller ect.. This is useful for institutions as it allows the audience to decide what film to see, it also makes it easier for producers to aim their products (films) out in the target market. Sub-Genre- A category that is a smaller division of genre.


For Example:

• Romantic Thriller.
• Psychological Thriller.
• Action Thriller.
• Romantic Comedy.

This again makes it easier for both producers and audience in terms of viewings.

Taken: Film Review

Taken , is a 2008 thriller film staring Liam Neeson and Maggie Grace. An ex CIA agent Bryan Mills' teenage daughter gets kidnapped in Paris he goes on a mission to find her. I enjoyed this film because throughout the film there was an element of suspense for the audience. Everytime that Neesons character was near to finding his daughter there was always an obstacle.
In particular i really liked the stunts used it made the intensity of the film even greater. This film gave me idead my my thriller through the things they used such used sound eg music and the type of music i should use and also the plot of the story has given me ideas for what i could do with mine e.g someone has to be saved or some pschycological element.

Intertextuality

Intertexuality  is visual referencing between films. Films take ideas, such as camera angles, movement, mise en scene and sound, from other films so audiences can recognise the inference.

Intertextuality

Intertextuality is the similarities between certain things. I.e Psycho shower scene and 'What Lies Beneath.' Similarities vary from such as the bathroom tiles being white to the white robe, the knifes being the same to the victim being a woman. Psycho set up a standard in the shower scene that has been emulated in many future films, the similarities are easily noticeable.

Intertexuality

Genre is a way of categorizing films. I.e Thriller, Comedy, Action, etc. This is useful for institutions because it makes it easier for producers to set their product out in the market for a certain audience. It also helps the audience in their choice to as what film they'd like to see.

Sub-Genre is the added genre to the main one. I.e Thriller/Comedy, Romantic/Comedy etc. This again sets a easier system for the producers and audiences in terms of viewings. An example of this is the film 'Friends with benefits' is a Romantic/Comedy film.

Another example is the film 'Deja Vu' which is an Action/Thriller, this had a slight influence on my film opening because it showed certain aspects of how to create tension and create an appeal to the audience. 

Another example of a sub-genre Thriller is 'He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not.' Although the opening seems all Romantic and such, the real genre is Thriller. From the opening, it'll be hard for the audience to gather that.

Supernatural Thrillers

I tend to enjoy supernatural thrillers more than any other thriller subgenre films. this is because the content of the films consist of intriguing story lines and characters. Also, they are normally about ghosts and other disturbances which can portray interesting elements in film; such as technical camera techniques and special effects.

One particular supernatural thriller i enjoy is The Eye (2008), a blind woman has an eye transplant wich allows her to see into the supernatural world.

Genre and Subgenre

Genre- is a way of categorizing films e.g romance , horror, action, thriller ans adventure. This useful as it allows the audience to decide what film they want to see. Also it allows the makers to target their audience in detail as they will know what to appeal to. It also gives a set of tools and conventions for the makers.

Sub-Genre - A category that is a smaller division of genre. For example :

• Romantic Thriller
• Action Thriller
• Romantic Comedy
• Psychological Thriller

Mr and Mrs Smith is seen as a romantic thriller and have a target audience for people aged 25 - 35 and fans of romance or thrillers also the i think this particular film targets both genders.

This can help influence my film as i can do a range of subgenres instead of sticking to one which will make my film opening more interesting and enjoyable to watch.

However, some films are considered to have more than one genre, which are called the subgenre. examples if these are; romcom (romance and comedy), action / adventure and action thrillers.

Collateral : Comparisons

The main comparisons in our version and the films version is the quality. In the movie slow motion is used when the two men enter whereas in a remake we walked slower to create an effect. The camera shots were quite similar as we were able to capture the main shots such as extreme close up and over the shoulder shots.
A problem that occured in our remake is background noise and people , people coming into are shots and noise effecting our sound.
 The differences in our remake and the actual movie was the location , theres was in an airport whilst ours was in a sainburys car park , are misc en scene was different through costume as they had on their charcaters clothing in comparison to us just having our normal clothes on ! :)

This trailer gives us as a viewer an idea of what is yet to happen through out the film. we get an insight of the main characters, we also get and idea of the narrative of the film. the trailer includes sound effects as well as the different camera shots used such as extreme close ups to establishing shots.

The Race to Witch Mountain was released in 2009, it is a science fiction/thriller film. It is a remake of the original 1975 fantasy film, Escape to Witch Mountain. 

Both versions of the film are based on the 1968 novel Escape to Witch Mountain by Alexander Key.

The film consists of well known actors and actresses such as-

A brief overview of the storyline of the film-

An alien spaceship crashes near Searchlight, Nevada, outside Las Vegas. Project Moon Dust, a secret Defence Department unit led by Henry Burke and one of his young unnamed task forces, arrives in black helicopters. Men in Black seize the ship and search for its passengers.

Jack Bruno is a former mob get-away driver who drives a cab to avoid returning to jail. 
After resisting two thugs who seek his services for a mob boss, Bruno finds two teenagers, Sara and Seth , in his cab. They offer $15,000 to drive to a certain destination, in which he discover their aliens have al kinds of powers. Burke's men follow the cab so that the aliens cant escape.
The two teenager retrieve the device their looking for within a hidden underground laboratory. whilst Jack curiously follows them.They are attacked by 'Siphon' a powerful armed alien assassin who followed them since the crash. The three escape Siphon as well as the agents sent out to capture them.
Bruno brings Seth and Sara to Dr. Friedman at the UFO convention, who realizes that the teenagers are what she has been searching for and joins the group. 
There, the teenagers explain to Jack and Friedman that they are from a dying planet 3,000 light years from Earth. Its government intends to invade Earth, so that their kind may survive. Their parents are scientists who sought out a way to save their planet without invasion but were arrested before completing their experiment. The teenagers came to retrieve the successful results, but the alien government sent the assassin to stop them. To save both worlds, they must retrieve their spaceship and return home. 
Fellow UFOlogist and conspiracy theorist Dr. Donald Harlan tells them that the spaceship was taken to the secret California government base Witch Mountain. The group arrives at the base but are captured. Jack and Friedman tries to threaten the agent by claiming that they will tell the public all of what they have witnessed, however this did not work.  
Jack and Friedman try to save the teenagers and with the unintentional help of the Siphon attacks Witch Mountain and battles the soldiers, allowing Jack and Friedman  free Seth and Sara. They manage to escape and abort to their spaceship bring them home. The teenagers give Jack and Friedman a tracking device that will allow the aliens to always find them before they travelled home.
Jack and Friedman become successful authors of Race to Witch Mountain: A True Story. They promote their book and knowledge on the UFO convention circuit, explaining that the publicity protects them from government reprisal. As they leave a convention the alien device activates, implying that the teenagers may be returning to Earth.

Our Remake Of Collatoral Compared To The Original Opening Of Collatoral

Our Remake Of Collatoral-






The main difference between the original opening of Collatoral and our remake is that they are filmed in a completely different setting as my group found it very difficult to find a location that was similar to the original opening.
Another difference we can see is that in the original opening we see a lot of people in the background (extra's) which allows the camera to be out of focus. However in our remake there are hardly no people giving ours less effect.
There is a difference on the angle at which the character bump into each other in the original opening, compared to our remake.
Also the way the characters pick up the bag shows a difference in the angle shot in our remake from the original opening at which the character drop and pick up the bags.
The main similarities in the original opening of Collatoral and our remake is the flow and sequence of the event that took place, from the way the character entered the scene, to the way the bumped into each other dropping and exchanging the wrong gags; to the way they exit the scene.
We also used similar props which were used in the original film. We also used similar angle/shots as the original film.

Thriller task.

In the Christmas holidays, our task was to watch a thriller film and talk about how it could be an inspiration for our film. The film I watched is called 'Disturbia,' and I've chosen this film because I think it's a pretty good film also I like the way they create the tension and build the storyline up.
